A Daily Reflection on the Scripture Readings at Mass…

“I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth.” (Revelation 3:15-16)

It is human nature to take the foot off the gas and to coast. We see it in football. A team is dominant and and moves to a large lead and then it gets lazy and unfocused, allowing the opponent to get back in the game.

In a more important setting, marriages suffer when one or both spouses begin taking the other for granted. They fail to make the effort. A husband begins caring more for himself than he cares for his wife. The sacred bond is harmed.

The same happens when we forget that we owe everything to God—the One who made us, sustains us in life, and gives us every grace needed. We become lukewarm, indifferent.

The Lord tells us with no uncertainty what He will do with us. He offers us everything. All we have to do is say yes and will to open our minds and hearts to his grace.

Lord, grant us this grace to truly love you—and those you place in our lives—more and more each day.
