American War Cemetery near Omaha Beach, Normandy (Colleville-sur-Mer )

Seventy-two years ago today, the largest invasion by armed forces in the history of the world took place as Allied forces during World War II landed on the beaches of Normandy, France. The operation, code-named “Operation Overlord,” began on June 6, 1944 and continued until late August of that year when Northern France was liberated. Each year, fewer veterans from this battle remain. We must never fail to honor them nor forget the sacrifice made by these soldiers and others to defeat the tyranny of the Fascist dictatorships that waged war on the free peoples of world during that evil time.

Lord God of Might and Mercy, we continue to pray for those who fought to protect us and defend liberty. May those who have died, by Your mercy, know Your saving graces and rest in your peace. And may we who have benefited from their sacrifice, never take our liberty for granted… make us ever grateful and vigilant. Amen.
