An Interview with Jef Murray by Tolkien Brazil

Nearly a year ago, I was contacted by Eduardo Stark of Tolkien Brazil, a large and active group of Tolkien and fantasy fans in South America. Eduardo has followed my work as a fantasy artist, and wanted to interview me for their website. The resulting text was, I fear, a bit daunting to translate into Portuguese, or, as is more likely, the Tolkien Brazil folk are just as busy as I often find myself to be. Nevertheless, they took my rather long-winded responses to their questions and one of their members, Sergio Ramos, finally completed the translation this month. Tolkien Brazil posted the entire interview on their website just this last week, along with several of my painting images of Middle-earth.

Only a few days after the Portuguese version appeared, Tolkien Italia, with the blessings of Tolkien Brazil, took the Portuguese translation and ported that over to Italian, thus making the discussion available to friends and fantasy fans in Italy as well. The link below will take you to the original English version of the interview, but I’ve included the illustrations chosen by Eduardo Stark for publication. I hope you enjoy it!

About the Author

Jef Murray was an internationally known Tolkien and fantasy artist/illustrator and counterfeit essayist. His paintings, sketches, and writings sprout sporadically from the leaves of Tolkien and Inklings publications (Amon Hen, Mallorn, Beyond Bree, Silver Leaves, Mythprints) and Catholic journals (The St. Austin Review, Gilbert Magazine, The Georgia Bulletin) worldwide.

Jef noted that, contrary to all sense and sensibility, his images wended their way into The Magic Ring: Deluxe Illustrated Edition by Friedrich de la Motte Fouque and Black & White Ogre Country: The Lost Tales of Hilary Tolkien by Hilary A. R. Tolkien.

Jef passed on to life eternal on August 3, 2015.
