“Then the King will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me’ ” (Matthew 25:34-36).

One of the pillars of Lent is almsgiving. Many suppose that offering monetary help to others is a sufficient expression of solidarity with our brothers and sisters in need. But, Jesus, in describing the General Judgment, speaks of our presence being an essential part of our love of others. This is why the Church stresses the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. Pope Francis teaches us that these acts are not a pious devotion, but rather a way of life to which we are called and expected to walk in.

In the coming days, look intently and expectantly for those whom God places in your daily walk. Ask Him for the knowledge of who they are, the wisdom for what He asks of you and the courage to carry out His will. May we be found among the blessed of Our Father!

Remember, you are dust, and to dust you will return. Repent and believe in the Gospel.
